Before a prescription leaves a pharmacy, the medicines, packaging, label and delivery address need to agree. Tranz Technologies built Pills Verify to automate this verification work for UK pharmacy operations and flag potential drug interactions for pharmacist review.

The challenge

One dispatch. Several details that must agree.

A prescription arriving at a pharmacy sets several tasks in motion. The pharmacist prepares the medicines, packs the order and checks the box, dispensing label and delivery address before dispatch. Each detail belongs to the same order, but each introduces another opportunity for a mismatch.

Completing these checks manually takes time and sustained attention. The work is repetitive, yet the consequences of overlooking a discrepancy matter. Pharmacy teams need a way to check the prepared order consistently while keeping the pharmacist focused on the issues that require professional judgement.

There is also a separate clinical question: could medicines on the same prescription interact? Checking the dispatch details alone does not address that concern. Potential interactions and their reported severity need to be brought to the pharmacist’s attention.

What we built

An AI verification module for the prescription-to-dispatch workflow

We built Pills Verify to automate the verification task within pharmacy operations. The module checks the prepared order against the prescription, covering the medicines, packaging, label and delivery address. Its purpose is to identify discrepancies so they can be reviewed before the order is dispatched.

This brings related checks into one verification workflow. Instead of treating the medicine selection, packed box and dispatch information as isolated tasks, Pills Verify checks whether they belong together. The pharmacy team can use the findings to focus its attention on details that need correction or further review.

01

Prescription & medicines

Check the medicines prepared for dispatch against the prescription.

02

Box & packaging

Verify the packaging as part of the prepared prescription order.

03

Label & address

Check the label and delivery address against the order being dispatched.

04

Drug interactions

Produce a report flagging potential interactions and reported severity for pharmacist review.

Drug interaction reporting

Flag potential interactions alongside operational checks

Pills Verify also produces an AI-generated drug interaction report. Where a prescription contains multiple medicines, the report flags potential interactions and their reported severity for pharmacist review.

For example, a prescription containing two medicines may raise an interaction concern even when both medicines have been packed correctly. Pills Verify brings that concern into view alongside the operational verification findings. The pharmacist can then assess the flag against appropriate clinical references and the patient’s circumstances.

The report supports clinical review. It does not establish that a combination is safe for a particular patient or replace the pharmacist’s professional judgement.

The change in the workflow

Automate repeated checks and bring exceptions into focus

Pills Verify moves repetitive verification work into an AI-assisted process. Its operational checks cover the prepared order, while the interaction report highlights potential concerns between prescribed medicines.

The intended benefit is less time spent repeating manual comparisons and clearer visibility of discrepancies that need attention. The pharmacist remains responsible for reviewing the findings and deciding the appropriate action before dispatch.

The outcome

A verification module built around real pharmacy work

The delivered module combines AI-assisted prescription-to-dispatch verification with drug interaction reporting. It addresses two distinct needs in the same workflow: checking that the prepared order matches the prescription and highlighting potential medicine interactions for review.

Pills Verify illustrates how applied AI can support detailed operational work in pharmacy software. The automation takes on repeated comparisons, and the findings give the pharmacy team a focused starting point for review.

Professional review

AI assistance with pharmacist accountability

Verification findings and interaction flags support the pharmacy team’s review of the order. Final clinical decisions remain with the pharmacist.

The General Pharmaceutical Council states that pharmacy professionals remain accountable for their decisions when using AI and should review its outputs. Read the GPhC position statement ↗
